Paul Henderson Jersey Homecoming Tour

What

In 1972, Paul Henderson scored the goal that united a nation during the Canada-Soviet Summit Series. Now, nearly 40 years later, a 48-foot trailer of memorabilia and history, including Paul Hendersons iconic jersey, is touring across Canada and will be in the parking lot of the Medicine Hat Arena on Wednesday, Apr. 13, 2011 from 3 p.m. 7 p.m. Admission is free.

With the Cold War as the backdrop, the 1972 Summit Series garnered worldwide attention. What began as a political exhibition between Canada and the Soviet Union became a war on ice, and one of our countrys greatest and most dramatic tests in sports history.

Almost any Canadian who is old enough can tell you exactly what he or she was doing on September 28, 1972, when Paul Henderson scored the game winning goal at 19:26 of the final period, says Alderman Jeremy Thompson. That goal, that game, and the name Paul Henderson are all part of hockey history and Canadian history and Im glad we can share the memories of that moment with our residents.

Paul Henderson gave his Team Canada jersey to trainer Joe Sgro shortly after the 1972 series. It was later sold to a Canadian collector, who then sold it to an unidentified American collector. In June 2010, the jersey resurfaced on the auction block and was purchased by Canadas own Mitchell Goldhar. Touted as the most significant piece of hockey memorabilia ever sold, the jersey has finally returned to its rightful home in Canada and is the inspiration for this cross-Canada tour.

The Henderson Jersey Homecoming Tour is an interactive, traveling experience in a 48-foot double expandable trailer. The tour features Hendersons 1972 Summit Series Jersey, the hockey gloves he wore in that game, rare Canadian hockey memorabilia and interactive activities, games and fun for all ages. Residents are encouraged to come out and enjoy the display.

PLUS the first 25 visitors will receive a special edition Henderson Jersey Homecoming Tour scarf.

The Henderson Jersey Homecoming Tour will be in the parking lot of the Medicine Hat Arena from 3 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Apr. 13. Admission is free.
